Bosch MD1 and MG1 Boot Glitch Unlocking Service
Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs are locked from the factory, which prevents a standard bench read of the original data. The boot glitch procedure temporarily interrupts the ECU during start up, allowing the tool to gain access and take a full read of the ECU. Once unlocked, the ECU can be read and written on the bench as normal.
ByteFLASH carries out this procedure in house using the MagicMotorSport FLEX. It is a hardware level job rather than a software one, so it is not something every workshop wants to take on. If you would rather not open ECUs and work on the circuit board yourself, send the ECU to us and we will handle the whole process.
What the procedure involves
Every ECU we receive goes through the same controlled process:
- The ECU casing is opened and the circuit board is removed
- A surface mount resistor is temporarily removed under a microscope
- The boot glitch is performed with the FLEX to unlock the ECU
- The resistor is refitted and the board is inspected
- A full bench read is carried out to confirm the ECU is working correctly before it is reassembled
The ECU is returned in the same condition it arrived in, unlocked and ready for reading and writing in bench mode with your own FLEX tool.

If you have the equipment and the soldering skills, the boot glitch is a procedure you can carry out in your own workshop. We have produced two videos, one covering the whole process from start to finish and one taking a close look at the resistor removal itself.
Watch both videos before attempting the procedure. Removing and refitting surface mount components carries a real risk of damaging the board, so it is worth understanding exactly what is involved first.
